LECTURE ON STREET CAR NAMED DESIRE FEB-19-2014

Before reading the play “A Street Car Named Desire” our task was to write about the given situation.
When we have not seen your sister for a long time and visiting her home and seeing her husband for the first time what will you do?
If you find their house shabby and do not like her husband will you tell her about it? What will you do?
These two questions before reading the play placed me in the situation of the character. This helped me analyze the character Stella and Blanche and their circumstances even better. The lecture was about desire and how will a person act when he is driven by desire. Also analysis of fear interfering natural desire was helpful in critical thinking part of the play.
Illusion is creating an alternative version of something and from wants and desire are satisfied. Blanches character was analyzed and her desire and illusion was analyzed. Also the themes of the play was analyzed.
The reluctance or inability to accept the truth
Gender inequality in the time period
Sexual desire
Isolation, darkness.
Fantasy vs reality

I also learnt about what is symbolism. The objects, characters, figures or colours used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. The concept of symbolism was helpful for me when I was writing my piece about “The Interpreter of Maladies” I was able to analyze the symbolism used by the author such as puffed rice, the hot weather, angry monkeys and sculptures in the Sun temple.

The lecture also had symbolism of lightness and darkness in “A Street Car Named Desire” Light representing reality, truth, honesty, revealing and openness. Darkness can be masking, hiding, illusion, protective and artificial.
