My Time in Literature Class

I never used to like reading literature. I have never analyzed the characters and what the author conveys through the writings. Things changed a lot this semester. I never thought I will like reading literature. The class lectures before reading the play gives me an outlook of what I should be looking for in the play. Also class discussions that makes me put myself in the situation of the characters helped me critically think about the characterization. The home works that makes me write about a situation or characters in the play improves my knowledge about the character. The fish bowl which is the main source for all the ideas for published writing was helpful in providing ideas for writings. I was able to see all these reflect on each paper I submit.

I used to have a lot of grammar mistakes and improper sentence structure before. Which I have never cared about. I never used to show any interest in my topic sentence, thesis or my conclusion paragraph. Once I had to put in all those for my grades in my first published writing I was able to find the difference in my writing. Writing center really helped me a lot in structuring my essay. I remember the first time I went to writing center. I can find a huge difference in my writing skills. I am able to find out some grammar mistakes.

As a thinker I am now able to critically think about the characterizations in each play. Each play helped me analyze the theme characters and surroundings of the story. The most interesting for me were Antigone, a street car named desire, the yellow wallpaper and interpreter of maladies. Fish bowl in classes helped me understand the play in other student point of view and also helped me answer something that I know of the play. It is more like group discussion of ideas from which everyone can learn something apart from professor’s lecture. The group presentation is similar but gives us time to analyze the things we are going to present.

Some of the things that I liked about the class are the way we interact. It is not a one way lecture. The ideas that I post in published pieces are from both the professor and my friends. Even the lectures that we attend are not completely listening part. We have to keep giving ideas through the class either it is a lecture or a fish bowl or a presentation. The other thing I like about the class is publishing our writing. We not only submit our writing, but also read others writing and comment on their ideas. In one of our last section of poetry, I realized for the first time how poem can create an impact on our emotion.

When I imagine how my future will be, I always consider myself as an engineer. I never realized the importance of reading literature, writing or poetry. This class helped me realize how important all these are for any field of study. In five years from now even if I am an engineer I now see myself as a confident speaker and writer. The things I learnt will help me alongside and will make me continue reading literature.
